What I do
I'm a researcher and analyst focusing on intelligence issues, military strategy, terrorism, and Afghanistan. I'm a former US Army soldier and CIA analyst. I received my PhD from Boston College writing on military statebuilding operations. I'm an instructor with the Elliott School at George Washington University. I also study military interventions and strategy, armed statebuilding operations (nation-building), and grey zone/proxy wars. I've taught classes on terrorism, international security, and military effectiveness. I've published articles in War on the Rocks, The Nation, The New Republic, The National Interest, The Diplomat, The Strategy Bridge, and The Journal of Political Science Education. Formerly, I was a research fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, I was a graduate fellow at the Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy, and I was also a consulting analyst for the International Institute for Strategic Studies covering Afghanistan and Pakistan. I completed two deployments to Afghanistan in support of the 3rd Special Forces Group.
